New landmark for Malay Heritage.Eateries & fast food can be found though a bit pricey as compared to surrounding.Maybe it’s air cond & newer. Occasionally bazar stalls will be there to attract passer by. Convenient location just opposite market & Joo Chiat Complex.

It’s the holiday season which calls for a visit to this place. Many people and food to try, taste is pretty authentic and crowded. Many people so the food quality drops by a little, nothing to rave about. I can get similar quality street food and neighborhood pasa malam. Parking is a nightmare as there is very little parking lot and many people coming to fill the tummy.

Nothing exciting here. Should have some Silat, Gym, Rock Climbling, skate board cirxuits, guitar labs to spice things up.

I just love the vibes, atmosphere and feeling of Wisma Geylang Serai.

It’s quite peaceful, cosy and clean everytime. It is quiet too especially when there’s no events taking place. Generally there’s not a lot of people. Perfect for an introvert like me who appreciates the solace unlike the hustling bustling of Geylang Serai Market and the stores in the building next door across the road.

Wisma Geylang Serai this retains the old charm and old Malay feel to it similar to the old Kampung houses which once stood in its place long time ago. Yet it does not feel outdated, mundane nor crowded like Joo Chiat Complex.

▪︎Level 1 is the food places, central stage area and CC areas.
▪︎Level 2 is the fashion areas.
▪︎Level 3 is the surau, conference rooms and all those. Kurnia@SG is there too.

The Surau is on level 3. Enter the lift, go to level 3, turn right and right again and you will reach the surau. The toilet is on the left. Exist the lift on level 3, turn right and turn left instead to go to the toilets. The surau is only open from 1pm-6pm. Only max of 5 men and 5 women permitted inside. If is already max, you can wait at the chairs provided outside the lifts. Bring your own mats (sejadahs) and telekung.

If you come after 6pm, you can solat at the tangga there. Yes, I got tegur by the security guard after I solat Maghrib outside the surau area. He told me nicely to solat at the tangga area next time.

This place is not really big .. you can find many shops dealing in malay / Muslim attires and traditional clothing’s . Prices vary .. there are also food outlets . Occasionally this mall will have a bazaar selling many and any products .. usually they are products or foodstuff that need introduction ..

Geylang Serai’s new community civic hub, open its doors to the public from May 2018 – it is a five-storey centre developed by the People’s Association, will house the new Geylang Serai Community Club, family service centre, a senior care centre, an open public plaza where community activities can be held, and arts studios for arts groups, where they can “experiment with new art forms and integrate with traditional arts forms”.

The hub, which sits on the former Malay Village, can be the “pulse of Malay life” which people can be excited about and also be reminded about the past. “learn about the Malay culture”.

Ive been staying in Johor Bahru for the pass 8 years and due to covid29 i had to come back to Singapore. I miss the food there and their local chicken fast food so I was so excited when I saw there was a Marrybrown here..I’m Singaporean but been staying in JB so it was a welcoming sight to see a Marrybrown right here in Singapore and it even has MiKari a Johor specialty.

Even on Sunday, this place was sad & lonely. Just came by since I got an appointment with some elders. Need to conduct more events to attract visitors. Security staff need to be more welcoming too. This is not Istana. You can’t expect visitors if you treat visitors as threats.

A mall that isnt really a mall in Geylang.

Similar concept to Our Tampines Hub (OTH), this place has got interesting shops around. Visibly clear decorations of the Malay Cultures with loads of displays, eg Gasing (top), congkak…etc.

There is also a TV area for the residents to watch where it also doubles as an event stage area. There is also various food choices available here and the best that we love is Marry Brown (sorry SG, we missed crossing over to our neighboring country, since cant travel out yet)….

Down side is that, this place has one of the lower human traffic in this area. A hub but unlike OTH, the lacking of human footprint here is rather visible. Nonetheless, it is a really good effort to try and sustain and reignite the Malay culture here in Geylang.

Fyi, we know this place very well in fact. Before Wisma Gelyang Serai (WGS) was up, this place had mini kampong areas.. this was called Kampong Melayu. And it had small shops selling trinkets and even furnitures and such. But as time grew past, many do not approach this area on a normal basis and it lots of shops closing down. The effects in turned made this place into a white elephant and some negative situations happened(shall not dwell on that).

So ya, time skipped to present, the relevant agencies and ministries involved made this place alive again. With events and vaccination station and more, hopefully making it better for future generations to come.

The lady at the entrance asked to see my checkin and vax screen on my phone. she didn’t accept that me and my husband were doing a group checkin. however later someone came along – my companions had informed me that he was not vaccinated and i also already knew from another occasion when i met this person. the entrance lady, probably new to SG, she waved him and another patron who escorted him into the cafe. no asks no checks. how come ah? i have a strong theory but will not bother.

The place should be filled with more malay cultural shops so it becomes a hub for tourist n locals to explore the intricate works that this race has to offer. The site should offer daily cultural activities to show case the colourful rich vibrant culture which the malay community can offer to other races.A good learning ground since this is a Community Centre that can promote harmony n understanding to different races . There’s kiddy rides at Level 1 outside Marry Brown, and a small playarea at Level 2.

Marry Brown itself is very kid-friendly. It has kids meal, porridge, waffle fries, nuggets…

Love how WGS is also very music centered. It showcases local talents. At times, they highlight the evergreen talents. They also have Gala Laga, something I look forward to every year. It’s like a yearly music festival that shows new and hip talents. Due to Covid, these shows had been via virtual platforms. Hoping to catch the performances live in the near future.

Place is mostly air conditioned, there are seats around and about for groups of people to sit and dine together.

It even has a “Reading Room” which is is actually a very good place to get work done. It has power points for charging your ohones and laptops. Cosy air conditioned place with good lighting.

WGS also has a wide variety of shopping and dining options but if you can’t find what you want there, it’s in the heart of Gelang Serai so options galore!!
