Excellent Monument in Honor of the people of Singapore who died during World War II by the Japanese. It was inaugurated on February 15, 1967. Government representatives, religious representatives, and civilians attended this inauguration. It is in the Downtown Core District. On Beach Road. In the Monument you can read the story in 5 languages. It is a wide park that emanates peace and reflection. It is commonly known as the Monument of the Chopsticks, due to its elongated shape.

This is a memorial to the civilian victims of the Japanese occupation between 1942 and 1945.

It’s 67 metre tall. Designed by Swan and Maclaren

Four tapering columns symbolise the shared wartime experiences and unity of the 4 main races in Singapore.

This memorial should be easily identifiable, but it’s still overshadowed by the Raffles city building which is enormous.

15.2.1942 commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore.
Winston Churchill called it the “worst disaster” and it was in fact the largest defeat in British military history.
The British controlled Malaya and Singapore was their main strategic point. The Japanese enhanced in China towards the South and the capture of Singapore was a strategic SEA target for them. (Another reason was that Japan was running out of energy resources and wanted to get access to oil rich Indonesia)
The Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita well prepared and with a clear plan had landed in Thailand and advanced south with only 30,000 men. (He refused to bring more forces taking the advantage of swift movement within a smaller group) The British erroneously considered the jungle terrain impassable, leading to a swift Japanese invasion as defences were inadequate.
The British counterpart Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival commanded 85,000 British troops but many units were ill equipped and lacked experience. The British having significant numerical and advantage but insufficient intelligence and leadership confusion caused wrong assumptions and the troops didn’t position themselves adequately.
The Japanese attacked the weakest part of the island on 8 February and advanced fast towards the city. The British began to run out of supplies. Japanese aircraft had continuously bombed the civilian water supply which was expected to fail within days.
On 15.2. Yamashita, to avoid further battle and loss of manpower, demanded an unconditional surrender. Percival evaluated his position, ignored his order to fight until the last man and capitulated. The surrender was signed in the Ford Motor Factory in upper Bukit Timah where Yamashita had positioned himself. About 80,000 British, Indian, Australian and local troops became prisoners of war, joining the 50,000 taken in Malaya. Many died of neglect, abuse or forced labour.
With a large Chinese population, a historical enemy of Japan, the occupation was also an extremely difficult time for the civilians and a large number perished during 1942 to 1945.
The former Ford Motor Company is now a highly recommended Museum providing much insight about the happenings before and after the Fall of Singapore!

Britain and the overseas Chinese who exploited the Malays with Britain were defeated by Japan, and built a monument with the feeling of “Japanese army gar”. Well, a normal memorial park in any country.

From this park there is an underground path for those who want to go to the Marina or Esplanade. In the basement is also widely used by residents to gather. This will not be found if you only use public transportation when visiting Singapore….. on foot you will find the daily life of residents.

A poignantly placed memorial to the vestiges of war from whence we grew our nation. It is great that they placed this in the CBD instead of some fringe area (I’m looking at you kranji war memorial). It’s nice to be able to sit at Lady M and stare out pensively at this obelisk and reminisce what it was like during the horrible times in the early 1940s, while enjoying your tea and millefeuille. Large monument honoring the Singapore soldiers giving their lives in WWII. It’s a peaceful place to sit, with granite benches on all four sides, and a grassy area surrounding that helps dampen the roadway nose from the traffic on all sides. I personally enjoy coming here at night. The monument is a striking bright white, is well lit and really stands out against the dark night sky. The base is surrounded by fountains which are also lit at night. Take a walk around the entire monument, and note each of the languages in Singapore are represented.

Blood Debt Tower built on February 15, 1967. A place where the remains of the massacre victims of the purge by the Japanese army are buried. A long time ago, a Japanese businessman said, “I want you to remove it because it’s an eyesore.” Ridiculous thing,,,. It seems that even Prime Minister Eisaku Sato, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, did not visit here. Somehow, as a Japanese, I feel pathetic. But on the other hand, it may also mean that we shouldn’t leave things up to politicians anymore.

I like the place as it is of historical value. The Merlion and the surrounding building is of fond memories. I used to work in Fullerton building in 80s. A lot of tourists are also around to take pictures with Merlion. It becomes an iconic place of Spore. People can proceed to dinner or shopping dancing singing and clubbing at this place.

Around the War Memorial Park Singapore we are prohibited from making noise around the monument and we must show our respect for the history of the monument. The War Memorial Park Singapore is a public place and there is no age limit for visitors. Facilities available can be accessed by wheelchair

In the CBD area, the War memorial pays tribute to soldiers of the second world war and civilians what died under Japanese occupation. Located in the War memorial Park, stop by during a walk or run in this area. A small monument marking efforts by the Indian National Army also stands here.

As I was reading the plaque written at the War Memorial Park. I grab my camera for a selfie. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel is at the back.

You will love strolling in Singapore. The temperature is perfect. No air pollution, the people are friendly too.

I love their malls. I just came from a mall 3 floors under this Park on my left. Usually malls are going up, but they have malls going down. You’ll get lighter skin since there is no sun.

    5 stars from me.

A tall monument stands high, commemorating the casualty of Singaporean civilians and soldiers during World War 2 under the occupation of Japanese Empire.

It is surrounded by a nice, shady park with lawn and many trees.
It is near the City Hall MRT station and other tourist attractions.

A very good place where young people can learn about the past and understand the value of peace more deeply.
