Gambling in Atlantic City

Without casino industry the city wouldn’t be as famous as it is today. Actually it was the legalization of casino gambling that revitalized the city after a long period of decline. Nowadays it is one of the main tourist attractions in Atlantic City, which is called “Gambling Capital of the East Coast”.

There are several famous casino hotels in Atlantic City, representing the companies that make their businesses also in Las Vegas and Macau. The biggest casino hotel is definitely “The Borgata”, the Tuscany style hotel with 2802 rooms, but also “Harrah’s Atlantic City” and “Trump Taj Mahal” with 2588 and 2248 rooms respectively are hard to oversee. The construction of these and other big hotels changed the skyline of Atlantic City considerably.

Some basic tips

A tip if you are visiting Atlantic City for the first time is to avoid the weekend, where all of the city’s 20,000 rooms will be booked. In recent years there has been a big police crackdown on drinking and driving. It has gotten people and especially the young crowd, which likes to go out and party to come to Atlantic City and get themselves a hotel room, before hitting the town for a great night and not having to worry about driving home afterwards.

On the weekend you also will not find a table game with less than a $25 minimum bet, with many others being $50 and even $100 the casinos are packed, and they know they can get away with raising the stakes. Visit during midweek however, and the casinos are almost giving away the rooms in order to get you to play in the casino, where you will find plenty of $5 blackjack and other low limit games to gamble on.

Basically casinos give you back some part of your money by offering you free meals or drinks, and sometimes even a free hotel room. Normally you have to play at least for three hours before you get a free meal, but often this rule is soften by the fact, that it is your first time there, so that you get something even if you haven’t played long enough.

Last but not least, as long as you care about your budget, you have to avoid new Revel, the Borgata, and Caesars, because these casinos have the highest table limits in the town!
