The Highlights of Prague

prague

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and has experienced a diverse history. Given its central location within the European continent, it should come as no surprise that the city and its surrounding areas have been the focus of fighting between many countries and dynasties.

Today, visitors to this wonderful city are able to experience rather more peaceful times. Since the lifting of the Iron Curtain and the following Velvet Revolution, Prague has become one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe.

So why is it that so many people are drawn to this location? In part, it can certainly be explained by an interest in history. There is something truly exciting about visiting a place that was once seen as being “off limits”. This is, however, only part of the story.

Since people have been welcomed back to the city in large numbers, it’s undoubtedly true to say that many have been surprised to see the beauty of Prague. This is not a bleak location, contrary to the impression that many may have of locations that were once under Communist rule. Prague is a colourful and vibrant place in which to spend time.

The people are friendly, the cuisine is exciting and there’s something special about being in a city where there are so many beautiful buildings. At times, it can feel as though the atmosphere is simply intoxicating.

From my own experiences of visiting Prague, I would have no hesitation in recommending the following highlights.

Charles Bridge

prague

At the heart of the medieval city sites the amazing Charles Bridge. This 14th century stone bridge now forms a natural meeting place for people and communities.

During the day, it’s a place to wander and to enjoy the arts and crafts that are available to purchase. By night, it’s the perfect way to look up to the hill beyond and to observe the beautifully lit cathedral and castle. The Charles Bridge is impossible to miss.

Old Town Square

A short walk from Charles Bridge is the Old Town Square, with its cafes and the famous astronomical clock. You’ll see the crowds gathering every hour to witness the clock in action, but there’s plenty more to see here.

Although you’ll pay a premium to enjoy a drink, or a light lunch, in one of the surrounding cafes, many would suggest that it is worth the money. From this spot, you can watch as the people of Prague and visitors from further afield make the most of the city.

Wenceslas Square

prague

As you walk through the winding streets of the medieval city, you emerge in Wenceslas Square. Although this is a location that certainly feels more modern than the Old Town Square, it also boasts a rich history.

The famous Good King Wenceslas is represented by a statue at one end of the long boulevard that is named after him. Many visitors are just as likely to take an interest, however, in the many modern shops and department stores that line the side of the square.

A visit to Prague is great at any time of year. The city tends to be busiest during the summer months, but has numerous hotels and guest houses. There is nothing to beat a visit to this stunning European capital city.
