It’s perhaps the oldest surviving building in Singapore. What a brilliant piece of architecture! It’s beautiful, elegant, classic and decorous both from inside and outside. A well maintained building and a perfect venue for art exhibitions and concerts. What amazed me was it was very spacious & neat from inside. The high ceilings with details of light, the stairs and each corner had a great detailed work. Indeed a beautiful architecture place to visit!

This place is nice as a museum, or a place to visit, but is frankly quite terrible when utilised for seminar style events where there needs to be constant movement between rooms.

The chairs are all fixed to the ground and there is very little clearance between the chair and the front and rear tables, which doesn’t leave any wriggle room to get to empty seats.

Really cool to see the old parliament, particularly seeing Lee Kuan Yew’s seat.

Never knew this place exists until my friend brought me over. Went over during a weekend, but it was really quiet inside, not much visitors. The interior was gorgeous, love the lighting, shadows, decorations etc.

This was the old parliament house of Singapore, so you could see the places where those important meetings were held. The chairs have all the big names’ name tag embedded on it.

We roam around the space by our own, saw a photography gallery on exhibition that day. I would come again to take some nice artsy photos next time hahaha. Do visit here and learn about them histories! I feel so inspired by the interior and the tranquil aura.

This is the old parliament, the main room look like a trial room, with very high ceilings and that ancient vibe. Great place for an event with speakers or presentations, where the atmosphere will influence the outcome.

Interesting place to visit. This was the original parliament building and all the seats are still in situ so you can sit in the prime ministers seat. It’s also a welcome break from the city heat.

Great place to just walk in and learn as much as you can. Wheelchair friendly, nicely air-conditioned, spacious and among other historical places in Singapore. The whole cluster has recently been given a facade uplift.

Went there last year to volunteer at The Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) – which I recommend people to go to if you got free time on your hands and would like to learn something interesting about literature – and I have to say that the interior was beautiful! And the surroundings outside too, of course. Awesome place to spend a weekend at.

I attended a seminar in the Arts house yesterday on the Grand Italian vision and the making of the Farnesina collection. The room is so quaint, with the old type of furniture and arranged all around like a court. It took us back to old times when Singapore was a new country.
The exhibition of contemporary art opens next week and seems to be a major collection of work, the first time it is being shown in Asia!

The Arts House has definitely seen better days. Sandwiched by the newly restored National Gallery and Victoria Theatre, the Arts House takes second fiddle as a sightseeing venue.

Originally Singapore’s old Parliament building, the Arts House is now home to numerous avant-garde performances and exhibitions for smaller, more intimate audiences. The theatre here has a thrust stage that makes for unique interpretations of any play.

Food options here are somewhat limited. The two cafes within the compound are not exceptional by any means, but have decent fare if you’re in a rush and everywhere else is full. Timbrè at the Arts House is probably your best bet for great bar food and drinks with live music performances through the night.

Good place to be here for a catch up with your friends and with the band playing. However, do take note to pick a table away from the stage if you want to enjoy your friend’s company more than the band. Food wise was not bad, didn’t really enjoy the buffalo wings. Beer variety was wide. Had a good night.

This place is commonly known as the Old Parliament House. The Arts House (present name) is where the Singapore Parliament used to sit. Located at Empress Place, it was originally built as a residence in 1827. After a series of major alterations and additions, possibly only the arches inside the porch are all that remain of the original building. The main building and the annex were gazetted as national monuments on 14 February 1992 and 26 June 1992, respectively. Together, they are now known as The Arts House, an arts venue.

The main building served as the Supreme Court until 1939, when the Supreme Court building was completed. Thereafter, Coleman’s building served as a government storehouse and as the office of the Department of Social Welfare, before becoming semi-derelict. Renovations began in 1953 to restore the building for use by the Legislative Assembly, and the new Legislative Assembly House was opened in July 1954 by then Governor John Nicoll.

On 5 June 1959, the building became known as the Parliament House, when the People’s Action Party became the ruling party of a self-governing Singapore. The first parliamentary session was opened by then President Yusof bin Ishak on 8 December 1965. The building served as the Parliament House until 1999. With the opening of the new Parliament House at 1 Parliament Place in October 1999, Coleman’s building became known as the Old Parliament House.

On 26 March 2004, the Old Parliament House was reopened as The Arts House, a venue for the performing and visual arts. Renovations costing S$15 million saw the conversion of the building into an entertainment space and a 75-seat film theatrette, among other changes. The most historical space, the “crown jewel” of The Arts House, is the 150-seat concert chamber known as The Chamber. It is home to concert recitals, film screenings and art exhibitions.

This place was previously a Parliamentary hall, but has now been converted into an arts venue for people to hold exhibitions, fashion walks, etc – thus the name Arts House. It’s a nice historic building, but as a tourist it’s not a place I would swing by on the top of my priority list.

I’ve produced and co-produced several art events here. The management and staff are good people. What the ArtsHouse needs more than anything is a good bar, café or restaurant to really take off as a venue. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in central Singapore and the city support is solid. If they could feature the edge that Substation and Timbre did, once upon a time, downtown SG would shine.

Completed in 1827, the former Parliament House was originally built as a residence for a Scottish merchant, John A. Maxwell. It served as a government office for the British administration and as a court-house, housing the Supreme Court until 1939. Designed by George D. Coleman, this Neo-Palladian building has been remodelled several times to its current Neoclassical look. It housed the Legislative Assembly after Singapore attained partial internal self-governance in 1955, and became the Parliament House following Singapore’s independence in 1965.

This place is well worth a couple of hours to visit to appreciate the beautiful architecture and rich history that accompanied the Arts House for the past century.

Access to the Arts house, or the old Parliament is free and for any tourist or local it’s a place to visit. The moment you step into the building you feel like you are going back in time. The walls upstairs chart the history of the building and the decisions that where made that has created the Singapore we know and love.

The Arts House is a valued historical landmark that dots the riverside in this area. It is situated by the newly restored National Gallery and Victoria Theatre, the Arts House and might be passed by if one was in a bit of a hurry as a sightseeing venue.

Originally Singapore’s old Parliament building, the Arts House is now home to arts and cultural performances and exhibitions though not for very large audiences due to its limited space and layout.

This adds to its unique appeal however whenever there are performances.

Take in this site and savour the back in time feel of the structure which has definitely played a major role in the history of Singapore..

Toilet facilities are limited in comparison to the facilities and the number of potential visitors/attendees of events at the location. The sensors at the ladies toilet downstairs are rather temperamental. It takes ages to respond and holds up the queue, causing exasperation, especially when one is press for time.

Attended a string quartet performance by Vox at the Chamber – it was an unforgettable experience, the ambience enhanced by electric candles. Loved that they kept the original chairs and you can even see the origibal translation knobs that were used when Parliament used to be in session at the Chambers. All in all a cosy setting for a live chamber performance. The show must go on!!

Went at a time where there weren’t many exhibitions being held which is quite unfortunate. The Arts House is a place that holds significant historical value making it a must-go attraction for all. It was interesting to visit the Former Parliament House and learn more about the political situation of old Singapore and even re-create and reimagine the scenes that would’ve played out there. Being able to sit in the same seat as prime minister LKY in the Chamber was definitely something i did not expect to do but an one of a kind experience nontheless. Now repurposed into an arts venue, I am looking forward to attending any exhibitions or concerts that will be held there. I recommend visiting The Arts House to all those who wish to act out and experience the timeless beauty of the Former Parliament House.
