I have tried Penang Laksa in Penang but didn’t like the fishy smell. Today I had a chance to try Penang Laksa in Singapore and to my surprise, I loved it. There was no fishy smell and the gravy is delicious. I also tried the Cockles and they were fantastic. I strongly recommend this stall if you are looking for the above dishes.

Really like the tanginess of the leksa! Can taste different herbs and spices from the broth. The noodles is quite special, the texture is like mee tai mak but looks like thick bee noon. (reminds me of lai fun 瀨粉 actually)

I always look for real Malaysia Asam Laksa (aka Penang laksa) since I work in Singapore, unfortunately can’t find it, but there’s one day after I met my client, when I go collect my car and smell the familiar taste over the store, then I found this store, but I was in rush didn’t stop by to try it, after pandemic lock down and busy work for years, I finally found one night and drop by to try it, well…the taste…is what I want, it was excellent, I finally found my hometown favourite food, with original taste, love it.

Not much of a Penang laksa fan. But the Penang laksa is very good. Might seem a little pricey at $7, you probably have fly to Penang to have the same goodness

It’s sour, slightly sweet and definitely packed a spicy punch. When all the flavours come together, it was simply amazing!

The Penang laksa (SGD7.50) noodle texture was special and different from the thick beehoon commonly sold in Singapore. The broth was quite tangy and flavourful, however the soup was only lukewarm therefore a little disappointing. The cockles (SGD10) was overcooked. The Penang laksa was quite pricey in my opinion. I would have given 5 star rating if the stall owner attitude could be more friendly.

I’m a huge fan of Penang Ayer Itam Assam laksa. I’m so glad to find this similar taste in Singapore! I love that the gravy is thick & flavorful, and I always do the one portion takeaway for $12 which is big enough for 2pax serving!

At $7, you may be paying a premium but quality and taste were impeccable and one of the most authentic Penang Assam Laksa in Singapore.

Serving was generous. Large bowl of rice noodles in thick Assam fish broth. The broth was vibrant, pungent, sour with a spicy kick (I felt the fieriness kick in in my stomach only after I ate but no regrets). The laksa was also supported by many ingredients – mackerel bits, fresh mint leaves, sliced onion, fermented prawn paste. Overall, a well-executed dish studded with freshness and authenticity.

Absolutely delicious Assam Penang laksa As one of my last days in Singapore, I explored the hawker center a little more to find anything that caught my eye that I hadn’t tried yet and, although tucked a little behind some of the other stalls, I’m SO glad I found this this one! The vendor had stepped out for a little bit but thank God I waited because she was such a welcoming, friendly soul to talk to and to learn more about the dishes she is so clearly passionate about, how she came to bring it in this hawker stall, and her background, and NYC! This review is definitely overdue as I am no longer in Singapore, but I think about this dish a lot and the great conversation we had! Safe to say this was one of the highlights of my abroad and an amazing way to end it on short notice! Will 100% be back when I visit SG again and highly recommend you do too!

As the portion is big, I didn’t want to finish all but requested to pack half of it to savour at home, the seller told me to try it at room temperature instead of heating up, I heed her advice and voila, I died happy and went to laksa heaven

With rice noodles, belachan and “hae gor” (fermented prawn sauce) imported from Penang, the taste for this stall’s Assam Laksa (portion is HUGE by the way) is as authentic as you can get here in Singapore.
I have had many an assam laksa gravies but I find @pat_phua’s (no relation) the most balanced and tastiest. It’s thick with fresh Kembung (Indian mackerel) and because of the superior type of assam fruit, possesses a refined brightness. Love her generous serving of fresh mint leaves, sweet pineapple, sliced onions, cucumber and “bunga kantan” (ginger flower) in every takeaway portion too ($12).
The first time I had this dish was when KS sent it to me. Today, it was Michelle who kindly did so. And thanks to her timely reminder, I decided to show my support and ordered a few packets to gift friends. Hope they will all enjoy their dinner as much as I have mine

The whole bowl is made of real ingredients, which is not the same as what you usually eat. The proprietress said that it is the authentic version of Penang (I remember her saying this). The whole bowl is made of fresh fish without oil.
It is probably above the level of medium spicy, friends who dare not eat spicy may have to talk to the boss to adjust the spicy level.
I personally think it is very spicy and delicious, I recommend coming to try the taste.

not the typical laksa you know of. (as the boss lady kept stressing) it was made without the coconut milk and coconut oil. so it was not as rich as the typical laksa but packed with sweet and sour from tropical fruits (mainly pineapple I think) and the freshness from cucumber, mint and onion. if you have to imagine its taste, think of gazpacho but with a spicy kick. added $10 for a plate full of ‘sea hum’. bit on the expensive side, but this is about the only penang laksa you can find in town.

Taste is near Penang ones (for me if such taste were to operate in Penang, probably it is just another stall, but to have such Penang taste in SG is something to Hoo haa and I have to give the owner for that. Not like some other stalls which I tasted in Jurong East Ave 1… (the owner claimed to sell Penang laksa…. Again I think that Jurong East stall clearly lost touch, taste and feel of what Penang laksa is all about)…

Though a bit ex 7.50 for Penang laksa, but at least the ingredients and taste really live up to the price… if you ask me… will I patronised it again…. I will say yes whenever I miss Penang laksa in SG. I can’t find any stall so similar taste like the Pg ones as compared to this….

The assam laksa was very tasty and the blood cockles were big and juicy. The laksa is rather pricey at $6.50 but it comes in a very large plate. It will be perfect if it is available at a smaller bowl for $4. The noodles were also very short so a soup spoon will be more useful than the fork and shallow spoon provided. For better hygiene, the raw herbs should not be uncovered and placed so close to the stall front, where many people walk by.

  94. Avatar photo

Pretty good assam laksa – could be a touch sweeter but excellent. Noodles have bite and the soup has that great sour kick

Note that there are a few different sizes to the takeaway. The 7.50 is soup noodles all together and meant for eating asap. The 10.00 is where the soup, noodles veg is separated so it stays fresh. The 10.00 version is larger than the 7.50 – probably closer to almost two portions. If not sure ask and she will explain – including weight if you so desire.

Like many others, I was a bit shocked at the price when I requested for separate packaging for the noodles and the soup. But after trying the Assam laksa, I think the pricing is quite reasonable. The portion is actually enough for 3 person. The soup has a lot of fish; it’s sour enough and there’s a lot of toppings like mint leaves, cucumber, lemon grass, onions. Definitely one of the better Assam laksa I have tried. I think the boss lady could have either changed the signboard or explain that the $12 takeaway is a bigger portion. That can help avoid a lot of misunderstanding.

I ordered the penang laksa in special packaging and the cockles via a delivery app (food panda I think). The food is a good generous portion, and all the ingredients are packed separately. I really like this so the food stays fresh and noodles springy when I eat. The cockles are juicy and the chilli is awesome! Will definitely be my go-to place for penang laksa!

Another mouth watering Penang Laksa experience ! The price of a Laksa bowl was S$10 but well worth it. There are just the right spices, vegetables and aroma to tingle your rosé buds. The cockles were quite sizable and thoroughly cleaned out. S$12 for a large plate ! A happy meal indeed.

The laksa is authentic and very delicious but the soup is slightly too sour.

I’m just curious for take away to separate the soup and noodles you will customers need to pay extra SGD 4 ???? Which is total of SGD 12 for one hawker Assam laksa.
How much u want to earn ?

Not much of a Penang laksa fan. But the Penang laksa is very good. Might seem a little pricey at $7, you probably have fly to Penang to have the same goodness

It’s sour, slightly sweet and definitely packed a spicy punch. When all the flavours come together, it was simply amazing!

I saw the takeaway price was $10 per portion which was expensive but since I am a fan of Penang Laksa and the Google rating was so high, I decided to try it. The stall owner asked me if I want to separate the soup which I answered yes so that the noodles won’t be overcooked. Imagine my shock when she charged me $15 for one portion. Even at a restaurant, I would not have to pay this kind of price. To be fair the portion is very big and she is very generous with the amount of fish but I don’t need so much.
As for the quality of the Laksa, it is quite good but certainly not the best. Strange that most of the 5 star reviews are by people with only 1 or 2 reviews. The Hae gor was very sweet and not authentic and the Cucumber was cut in thick chunks which makes it too hard. Will definitely not be back.

Came to Singapore for a month and stumbled across this shop. I used to eat Laksa with coconut milk, but this one in Penang is different. Only after searching online did I know that Ben Cheng’s food is more spicy and fresh to reflect the original taste of the ingredients. The first time I ate it, it was unforgettable. If you pass by China Town, it is recommended to try it. The price is $10 a piece, but you get what you pay for, and this unique taste is worth it

I am from Penang and currently based in Singapore. I have tried several assam laksa in Singapore and none can match this stall.

I have seen reviews which stated that auntie’s laksa is expensive $6.50. Such comment would probably come from those who dont buy groceries and cook at home. The laksa beras auntie cooks for you is authentically from Penang (i have seen the packaging). The ikan kembung is not cheap in Singapore and a lot of time is required to debone. The bunga kantan costs around 1 dollar per stalk. Mint leaves are not cheap too and have to be provided freshly. Mind you, these things may seem cheap but in actual fact they are not!!!

The gravy is sour, spicy and syok!!! I finished the gravy!!

The portion is not small. It is in fact bigger than the portion i had in penang.

I nvr knew the existence of this stall… jus had my lunch n was jus on my way to takeaway the soon kueh n the aroma of tis small hidden stall make me decided to stop n take a look at tis stall….

Priced at $10 a bowl. I felt its quite pricey for a hawker stall…Still feeling full, i was contemplating if I should takeaway instead…. But somehow e smell makes me cant wait e excitement…. So I decided to order a bowl.

OMG glad tat I ordered… it was the best penang laksa i had in sin… usually ppl serve chopped mint leaves & boiling hot gravy…
But tis stall serves warm gravy and a very generous sized whole fresh, cooled mint leaves… the noodles are brought in fr Malaysia… very “qq” feel!!! Super super love the texture of the noodles…when I asked e lady why wasn’t e laksa hot temperature like usually served in singapore… she explained tat cos penang laksa ingredients consists of fresh ingredients like pineapples, mint leaves, cucumbers n torch flowers, serving it boiling hot will make all e fresh ingredients not springy n fresh!!!
Such a logical n makes total sense!!!!

It was $10 well spent and was worth me stuffing my tummy with 2 lunches within 30mins gap!!!! Will definitely make tis a monthly affair to enjoy tis bowl of penang laksa…

It can be ordered without spicy but I recommend that even if you don’t like spicy, you at least ask him to add a little chili because I think that otherwise the dish would not be the same.
