Steamed fish and braised pork belly are nice. Porridge is not those soft cooked type, it is cooked with good chewing texture.

Looks good but not truly up to mark.

The most important ingredient of teo chew porridge is the “kiam cai”… it has to be salty, it has to be very soft, it has to be “melt in your mouth” but it didn’t meet all those qualities.

The prices were also not affordable.

Especially the squid because they would simply charge you whatever price they felt like it.

    Nope… i wouldn’t recommend this teochew porridge…

Food wise, tasty! Especially the hae bi hiam. Love it! Fish cakes a bit stale though, maybe we came too late.

The standard of the food has deteriorated till it has become average to below average. There is nothing specially tasty about the food here. On top of that it’s quite over priced. I order a bowl of porridge, some cabbage and 4 bites of five spice roll and paid $5.80

One of my favourite hangouts if I have a craving for teochew porridge ! Most of the dishes for me are above average and feels very homecooked (if you know what I mean). However, the ace for me has to be their braised duck meat! It is soft, succulent and taste of herbs, granted some people might not like it. The texture of the meat is simply heaven for me. Do not miss it – order the duck meat with their porridge.

First time eating here, find that the food was pretty good. There’s this old school cooking/taste vibes you wil get from the dishes here. Tasted really like homecooked food. I liked the steam fish, heng Cai and the braised items. The cabbage and fish cake could be better. Portions a little bit small for the price, otherwise, thought it was a pretty good find.

Stone throw away from Kovan MRT. THe perfect food for the rainy weather. Ordered a number of side dishes and always not more than $30. Our favourite side dish is the Chinese cabbage, as you can see, we came back for more on day 2.

Being Teochew I’m also on the lookout for Teochew dishes. Was surprise to see steam squid (sotong) and decided to order. I had the steamed squid, handmade fish cake and fried spinach with white bait (银鱼). The squid and home made fish cake were very fresh. It comes with a plum sauce dip. Spinach was full of wokhey which was quite unexpected. Overall satisfied with the meal. Cost $9.40. Worth eating.

Boss, I think you really need to do something with your pricing. Since you mentioned the prices are very varied, for sure even your staff will get it wrong sometimes especially during hectic hours. The burden is on you to ensure it is right.

Hope your restaurant can become one of the stars in Hougang. People these days rely heavily on people’s reviews like these on Google Map and other food sites and if you take the extra mile to please, people will appreciate it and words will travel far.

I lunched at your restaurant before and food is really ok, price also reasonable. And once it gets featured somewhere, your business will flourish for sure.

Will be dropping by again some time.

    All the best. ^^)b

    1. Porridge was not soft enough, it is rice with water texture.
    2. Heng cai is overly salted and over cooked. Needs some washing in my rice with water.
    3. Rest of dishes I ordered was pretty cold. Not even mild warm.
    4. Only happy with the otah chunk. Overall price of the wholemeal was considered pricy in my opinion.

First things first. This place does not close at 12mn? The shutters were already semi closed when I was there at about 10pm on a weekday night. Friend and I first met for dinner at Shun Shun at about 8.45pm.. there was still food left though, choices might be limited depending on one’s appetite. Overall, for 6 dishes, bowl of rice and a bowl of porridge, wallet damage was S$17.90. Food was tasty and we had an easy time finding a seat. Dining area can be a little stuffy though. But all was good since there weren’t too many people around. Just note that if you are thinking of heading there for supper (post 9pm), be prepared to find the store closed. But not to fret, many other food options around the corner. 😛

I used to patronise this Teochew Porridge quite frequently until the change in owner/crew a few years ago. Back then the price was affordable. The previous crew is running a shop at Serangoon Road.

The standard has been the same and the food is still nice. I would not say the price is affordable for all dishes. For example, one piece of Otah is S$6. It really depends on what do you order.

This place only sells mixed vege rice and porridge at a very cheap price, hence the long queues during peak periods. Gives off a very old school vibe but no different from the usual cai fan stalls. Point to dishes and and they’ll charge you accordingly.

Taste is not bad but nothing really eye opening. You can get drinks here as well. Their chili however is awesome if you’re eating there.

The porridge tastes different after the new management change. I don’t know whether they change the cook too. Can you guys taste the difference also or it’s just me? The cabbage is not as soft as it was in the past, the minced pork has totally no taste at all and they use poor quality pork I think because it’s so chewy. Even the clams or lala we called it has no taste in the sauce.

Edited: Unfortunately, like some other reviews have pointed out – it seems that the price does fluctuate even with the same usual dishes that I’ve ordered. So this definitely hampers my intention of going back as often, hence the reduced rating. But I must say this – after a round of trying all the Teochew Mui in Kovan area, I think this stall served the most palatable array of dishes out of the lot. Their food is also not overly salty nor oily. If you wanna eat clean, you can definitely come here.

Previous review: Rare old school Teochew porridge joint in Kovan. So far, I’ve probably ordered the usual food items and it’s quite reasonably priced. Has both rice and porridge options. Dishes have the 古早味, though a bit salty (and possibly a good idea to balance out with the porridge :D). Have seen both the young and old dine here, place tends to get crowded during meal times. Will come back again

A frequent haunt for porridge that isn’t too crowded and is located not too far away from places that I can park. There is a decent variety of dish choices, but I really prefer this place for its convenient by car and the quietness of its location since it is not directly by the main road. The food is not too pricey especially when sharing and there queues are usually quite short. The duck dish is my usual go to.

Most reasonably priced cai fan I have found. They offer the choice of having rice or porridge, but I chose the rice option. Ordered 2 meat and 1 veg and another portion of 3 veg and 1 meat. Paid less than $11 for both. Sweet and sour pork was the star of the entire meal. Unlike those always filled with flour, the ones from Soon Soon were meaty and covered with a tasty sauce. Highly recommended!

Soon soon! A place for heartwarming and healthy food . While the teochew porridge stall can seem pretty normal from afar, the food inside is anything but average. It serves a wide variety of choices and the high customer turnover often means the food is quite freshly cooked and warm – which often can be an issues stores selling this type of cuisine.

The ambience of the place is rather average with nothing in particular standing out. The place is a 5 minute walk from Kovan mrt so so remember to bring an umbrella in rainy weather. Notable after meal activites includes a good walk at heartland mall or drinks at the offshore bar nearby.

Located in a row of old shops along Simon Road, near the junction with Upper Serangoon Road. The place has a nostalgic feel as if you are back to the 60’s or 70’s.The Teochew porridge and rice and their selection of cooked foods are all nice and tasty, can get coffee, tea and soft drinks also. The prices are relatively cheap compared with many other places. One problem here is with parking. There are very limited parking lots infront of it, along the short service road.

Hougang and Kovan is probably well famous for their Teochew Porridge given the rich Teochew history of this location in SG since the early 80s to 90s. Soon Soon Teochew Porridge is my favorite and most frequented porridge stall within the vicinity – simply for its affordable and quality dishes.

You might have heard of other outlets charging outrageous dollar amounts for certain dishes but Soon Soon is consistent not only with their prices, but also quality of each dish which they produce in fresh batches for lunch and dinner.

My usuals are the Sweet and Sour Pork, Otah, Long Beans, Fried Egg, Ginger Chicken, and tau pok/tau kwa. You can pair them with a warm bowl of porridge during rainy days (great comfort food for that weather!) or just a bowl of rice. Seating capacity is decent. Place is also well-ventilated. Service is extremely quick. 5mins walk from Kovan MRT as well. Super convenient! Parallel parking available right outside the store or opposite at Heartland mall.

It is really nice. But it’s a tad expensive. For me I’ll go for it when the craving arises.

Comfort food. Teochew porridge is my go to food especially when I am feeling under the weather. A piping hot bowl of porridge with duck gravy, home made fish cake will make my day. They have a pretty good selection of dishes, all very traditional eg fish with black bean sauce, pig’s intestines and my favourite mustard leaves (giam chye) with sliced chilli for that added oomph.. Only problem is parking

Had late dinner here last weekend. Parking is a challenge. Had to park 2 lanes away and walked over.
Food wise, tasty! Especially the hae bi hiam. Love it! Fish cakes a bit stale though, maybe we came too late.
    Sits 5 per table.

A less well known TeoChew porridge shop in Simon place compared to the one in the main road, and much cheaper. Though the price had risen during my last visit due to the inflation.

** Edit 2020: Apparently, the original Soon Soon owners sold their business and started White House Teochew Porridge at Boon Keng

Of the “Opposition Supper Party” stretch from Ah Seah to Heng Long, the old Soon Soon has always been my top stop.

Always a good place for teochew porridge! Come early to have a wider selection of dishes as these get sold out rather quickly but some gets replenished throughout the day. Value for money home cooked food. Highly recommended

Comfort food for our family. Delightful Teochew porridge with assortment of small side dishes. Love the variety, our favourite food is minced pork and cabbage. Chai Poh egg (radish) is always soldout. Price is reasonable.

used to be my favourite caifan place but recently the shop owner changed and the price is quite unreasonable, didn’t visit as much as i used to on a weekly basis. The dishes are not as scrumptious as it used to taste, miss the culinary skills from the previous owner.

Wide variety of authentic Teochew food. Dishes are very decently prepared to the right flavor, neither too over or under cooked. Not overly salty and oily also. Best Teochew porridge around though not the cheapest.
