    – Michelin star sushi
    – High-quality sushi and one of the best in Singapore though some pieces of fish were a bit sub-par. Nonetheless, they do serve some of the rarer / more interesting fish you typically do not find at other places, even at fine-dining sushi joints
    – Had the Omakase dinner set which was extremely filling – would rather they serve 2-3 fewer courses and increase the premium of some fish. Expensive.

Went here for lunch with a friend and had the nine piece menu for ~75 sgd. When I walked in, I felt like I was back in Japan. They fly their fish from Japan almost daily and the quality and attention to detail shown by the chefs is impeccable. Service was lovely and attentive and being able to watch your food being prepared in front of you adds another layer to the dining experience. If you truly enjoy Japanese food, I would add Shinji to your bucket list. Only downside is that I won’t be able to eat Japanese food in Australia for the next six months as the bar has now been set so high!

Legit omakase experience outside of japan.
    The Good-
Food was very good. Sushiman was a Japanese gentleman that would explain all the dishes and was very polite, answering any questions.
Place is pretty amazing, and it does feel you are in a restaurant in Japan.
    The Bad –
    For this price tag, everything needs to be flawless, but 2 points were quite disappointing and worth highlighting;
    – Waitress service was a tad disruptive, constantly interrupting conversation to pour more sake to a glass that was already half full. I also had the impression that the most expensive drinks were being “pushed” my way.
    – the tuna(Akami) was just cheap; it looked and tasted cheap. This is inexcusable and really a shame, as Akami is really the cheapest part of the tuna. Felt like a rip off. (Photo below)
Very nice experience overall, but still feels a bit pricey for what is delivered.

Had an exquisite dinner at Shinji. Indeed almost flawless or near perfect offering, from environment, setup, cosy design, utensils, fresh air flown fishes, especially the sushi rice is palatable. However, wish vineger could be slightly stronger to my liking. Also, the eels on sushi seems served streamed, would be great if further roasted. Well, again, it’s individual liking. Of course, exquisite services and foods, comes at price.

Shinji is excellent but not for everyone. Firstly, this is not the type of restaurant where you just turn up to check it out. My recommendation is to peruse their menu and more importantly prices before you make your reservation. The restaurant is tucked away in the corridors of the legendary Raffle’s Hotel. It’s a bit of a mission to find it. Once seated you get a fully dedicated chef to yourself and everyone is overly courteous. Still, I felt that this is a get in, enjoy your food, pay and get out type of place. Don’t expect to make strong connection as you would with an owner of a, say, Greek or Italian restaurant. I tried their top menu item and found it to be a wonderful, flawless experience from preparation to taste. Am I glad I went there? Absolutely. Would I be back? Unlikely. I found that a local sushi/sashimi restaurant provided a close, if not as exclusive food experience for around $80 per person. Shinji was $450.

Had the chef’s special and Yume omakase set for lunch and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The fish was so fresh you could taste the sea in it. Everything was beautifully presented and one can tell the ingredients were freshly sourced and curated. The service was impeccable too, with a very attentive waitress who took the trouble to explain each dish to me. As I was celebrating my son’s birthday, the restaurant prepared a birthday special that included sea salt ice cream. Overall it was a wonderful dining experience. Pricey but well worth the price!

Food was excellent! But for 2 people, along with one 720ml bottle of sake, cost was just under SG$1000!
I do enjoy Omakase once in a while but I wish every chef could give an explanation on what they serve. Especially on the types of fish, the cut, how they differ by season and so on.
That would make the cost worthwhile. Otherwise, it might be better to explore an ala carte menu and get more than one taste of an item to reinforce the flavour, texture and overall experience.

Experience and food were both good but not good enough for the price tag. At over $350 per person I expect to be blown away and that wasn’t the case.

Ordered the $500 festive Omakase and was very happy with it. The ingredients were so fresh and the taste really stayed in the mouth for a while. The sequence of every dish was carefully managed so they wouldn’t overpower each other. The fish nigiris were the highlight. I really liked the grilled tuna belly and raw otoro. The ice cream Mochi in the dessert was spot on too. Was surprised they could find such fresh ingredients and served them fast.

I liked it. Enjoyed the meal. Sightly on the pricey side but obviously they have a well established reputation. Just one thing I noticed when it came to the shiroko the guy announced it as fish sperm. Appreciate his honesty but maybe slightly off putting though I know he didn’t mean any harm. As a guy I try not to imagine eating any kind of sperm

I’ve been coming to shinji for a few years now, and the standard of food has remained top notch. I think it’s important for a sushi place to have great quality vinegared rice and the rice here at shinji is always perfect.

Had the Yume set today – a mix of sashimi, cooked dishes & sushi. Great meal from start to finish.

Service was attentive and meticulous as usual.

Have been here twice in a month – I think that in itself speaks volumes to how amazing the food here is! Look no further if you want an authentic omakase experience. All the chefs are Japanese and waitresses don cute yukatas. The chefs are very friendly and can strike up a conversation (only if you want to of course). Fishes are flown in 3x a week due to Covid (previously 4x). Some places tend to overmarinate / overcoat the fish with sauce which overpowers the original taste but not here! Lunch prices are very affordable given the quality, ambiance and skills of the chefs. I typically get the 12 pc sushi omakase which includes uni, chuutoro, ootoro and leaves my tummy full and satisfied.

Had the twelve piece sushi meal. Very costly at $150+ but I mean the food was heavenly, from fatty tuna to uni sushi. My first time eating sushi with my hands like a true Japanese, great experience. The chef was super nice explaining each sushi, though I’m not advanced in the sushi arts to understand what he was referring to. But he was very patient in trying to make us understand. My favourite was the fatty tuna which melts in your mouth and lime ika. Beautiful meal, if i could afford it, i would only eat here.

Had an amazing omakase experience here for lunch. It’s about 200++ sgd per person so it’s really only for that special occasion (unless you’re loaded and you has plenty of cash to spare). The selection of fish is quite good and the chef is very talented. They have the usual aji, chutoro, otoro, uni, prawn sushi but also some unusual ones like leather jacket fish, and Japanese silver whiting. The rice is pretty spectacular as well – nicely packed and tasty. The extra flavors on top of the sushi like minced spring onions, sea salt or yuzu zest really bring out the flavors of the fish and give the sushi a different dimension too. As with most sushi places, sit at the counter for best results.

Quality of the sashimi and sushi is right up there with the top 10 in Tokyo and Kyoto. Not the cheapest meal but certainly memorable. If you and your spouse love sushi/sashimi, definitely eat here at least once a year on your anniversary or birthday.

Maguro, all fantastic, melt in your mouth and the right mouthfeel with perfect temperature sushi rice.

Uni, it’s the freshest I’ve eaten outside of Tsukiji. Ikura is fresh and refreshingly briny without being too “fishy”.

The Aji is worth ordering seconds, I’d put it together with the Chutoro as a “2nd round” must order, if stomach allows.

The Tamago is smooth and firm, and slightly sweet. The feeling is between agar agar/pudding in terms of firmness. Pity only a small cube at the end.

The only blah thing about the lunch/dinner set is the boiled Kuruma Ebi, which by itself was a tasty dish, but when stacked up against the rest of the cast, felt lacklustre.

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I have to say this is one of the best Japanese sushi restaurants I have ever been to. Firstly the service was amazing, the staff were extremely friendly and patient. They explained to me the different types of dishes and what ingredients were used in it which was very insightful. The environment makes you feel like you are in a Japanese home which was very comforting and peaceful. Moving on the food, the food was just simply amazing. Every mouthful of sushi was so fresh. It is as though you are eating the sushi straight from when it was caught from the sea. You can just taste the ocean directly in your mouth which was amazing. The different types of sushi and dishes had so many unique flavours which left me really satisfied with every bite. The presentation of the dishes was really good which added to the overall experience, the Japanese dining experience. The desserts were exceptional too and I would say the japanese melon was one of the highlights. It is so sweet and juicy which was very refreshing. I would highly recommend trying it. Overall shinji is one of those restaurants that leaves you very happy and satisfied once you walk out of the restaurant. I will never forget the experience.

Celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary after reading great reviews… and it did not disappoint!!! Everything was pitch perfect, from the service, the sushi chef (from Tokyo but worked in new york, Hawaii, etc), the ambience, and even the delightfully quirky celebration for our big occasion. High on this list of perfection has to be the food. So fresh and well presented, the experience of the omakase is worth every single cent.

Stellar service and excellent sushi/sashimi. Undoubtedly the produce is fresh.

However the food is run of the mill and uninspiring. You would think Japanese cuisine would have more to offer than just uni in various guises

With this pricing there is little wow factor and nothing novel. Wonder how much youre paying for the (extension) of the michelin 1 star (milking it for everything it has)

There are better Japanese restaurants that will give a more satisfying meal

I am fortunate to have dined in such a setting in Japan before, and I must say I appreciate that the chefs in Singapore spoke better English. For someone who can’t speak Japanese, it is great to have better clarity what I’m actually eating :p

Reservation is a must. And please pick the counter seats. That’s the whole point to visit such restaurants, to marvel at the workmanship of these chefs, at their training and at their discipline and at their precision.

The menu is straight forward. I would recommend going for omakase though they are more expensive.

    Credit cards accepted.

Our omakase lunch was a delightful experience. The intrinsic quality and taste of the food were brought out as our chef skillfully prepared our dishes. The sashimi were fresh and of premium quality and we were sufficiently filled at the end of the meal – enough to last us past dinner time! Staff were also warm and attentive. As we were here for a birthday celebration, we had light effects as a mini bonus for our birthday dessert Will definitely be back again.

Possibly the best sushi fare you can get in Singapore. The chefs in Shinji really take a lot of pride in the food they serve, and service was immaculate.

Although they are pricey for dinner, you can come by during lunch where its much fairer in value. In any case, I try to never let prices affect the ratings I give, as I see it more as a rating on food, not anything else.

Hence, taste wise, Shinji definitely deserves full marks.

Had a wonderful lunch at Shinji recently.
With the covid situation, they’ve added plexiglass barrier between guests on the counter.
I ordered the sushi set rather than the omakase because i was there for the sushi… And it was glorious. I loved the wonderful leatherfish that bracingly sour with an amazing texture. All the mackerel pieces were also exceptional, the aji, saba and shiro aji. All were meaty, well cured and so full of umami.

This was my first high end sushi experience and I loved loved loved it. I think you really have to have good sushi once in your life. The tuna just melted and the rice is stunning. You can make out the individual grains, which each have just enough bite, and the rice ball just about holds its shape.

One of the best Japanese restaurant in Singapore! Previously, Shinji was located across the street in Raffles Hotel. Due to the hotel’s renovation, Shinji moved across to the current location in Carlton.

Location may be slightly different but everything else remain the stay. Once you enter the restaurant, you are teleported into a fine dining sushi restaurant, as though you are in Japan. From the chefs to the fishes and even some of the accessories, everything is made in Japan.

Order an omakase and enjoy in the indulgence. Forget about everything at work and enjoy the freshest and tastiest sushi, right here in Singapore.

Even though the sushi omakase was of the highest quality the lack of professional etiquette and poor level of service displayed by the Apprentice Chef and servers was very disappointing.
Impeccable service is a requirement for sushi omakase meals as they are about the entire experience and one aspect falling short can leave a bad taste in your mouth (pun intended). And that’s how one chef at Shinji made us feel. Though the rudeness was not directed at us specifically, witnessing it SOURED our experience nonetheless. The chef was not attentive in general, seemed slightly perturbed, was curt when asked questions about ingredients by diners and would consistently gossip and chat up the female servers – they would laugh to one another right over our heads. One really inappropriate thing, in my opinion, was after one group had left the chef gossiped to the server (in Japanese) about them right in front of us; I watched him point at the empty seat and say “this woman, many complaints!” They both laughed about it some more as if we weren’t even there. This is supposed to be a high-end establishment not a fast food or casual office setting, where was their self-restraint and professionalism?

We went to shinji at Carleton hotel for my birthday dinner. We ordered Sushi edomae- Appetiser, Nigiri Sushi 15 pieces, soup, Japanese fruit and Junmai dai ginjyo sake. We took a bar table and it was interesting because the chef makes the sushi where you are sat. Each dish is presented as it is made. The sashimi and sushi is as good as anything you would get in Tokyo. The chefs are brought in from Japan after serving their apprenticeship and they are top drawer. If you are rich, eat here every week. If you are a foodie eat here on special occasions. It’s a fantastic experience but that doesn’t come cheap anywhere. First time back in Shinji after 5 years. Very high standards of sushi, definitely one of the best around. Although somehow I feel it does not give me any wow factor. I feel that there are a handful of other sushi restaurants that have sprouted out in Singapore over the past few years that have caught up or even surpassed them. As for sake, I love their in-house sake which is a collaboration with Yukinobosha. The Junmai Daiginjo was bright, elegant and aromatic.

Overall a very decent dinner that met expectations but nothing more than that.

First time here for our wedding anniversary. It’s 5 star pricing and location and set up (small and private) . But we didn’t get the counter seat. So the ambience for me and experience was so so. I ordered Omakaze but at normal seat , served by waitress ; who rush through name of each fish , no sequence and plating was super normal, I was not blown away or having a time of my lifetime for the price paid. All my prior Omakaze was definitely a better experience. If don’t get a counter seat, don’t go. Fishes are repetitive . No specialty no unique stuff and presentation normal. If get normal seat , just order sushi platter. Don’t order Omakaze. If you are sushi lover and love’s authenticity of eating sushi, have a try (my husband ate with hand) . Only wow was the dessert – which I guess included in the price. Japanese melon and orange. Nothing else. But was the sweetest melon I ever had. Didn’t take photo of the dessert haha. Again coz the presentation is just normal . Not insta worthy

Managed to get our lunch reservation in Chef Koichiro Oshino’s room which seats only 8.
Everyone who seats in this room seems to know the chef well. So, your dining experience may be affected by who seats with you in this room.

We ordered the 12 piece. We had the seat right in front of chef, watching him preparing the sushi is an art. Savoring each sushi with delight and end off with joy. Thankfully, we didn’t order the 15 piece, it will be too much for me.

Unlike other place, I reckon it is not necessary to ask for additional wasabi or soy sauce if the chef did not provide. It is all well proportion. Anything more will ruin the taste of his creation.

I noticed Chef used a fair bit of shiso (perilla leaf) and yuzu, it doesn’t rob the taste of the fish and yet bring your palate to another level.

Was looking at the photos I took, you can see the grain, the glaze on the sushi… is beautiful.

It was a nice dining experience with excellent service and the right amount of attention given.

Their lunch set is really worth what’s paid, although it’s still pricey in itself. The experience, the quality of the fish, and the whole shabang of service and vibes is really worth everything you pay. Add some sake, and you’re good for enjoying the whole afternoon!

One of the best sushi restaurants in Singapore in my view. Super quality – fish and assorted seafood always very fresh. Service is excellent as well (e.g. they always exchange your lukewarm tea with a brand new cup of hot tea instead of just topping up). Recommend coming for lunch if you’re looking for good value. Always heard good recommendations from friends and read good reviews too about Shinji. Thought I should try it for myself to see if it is really what others think. We went for the $250 and $350 Omakase lunch menu just to see the difference. In my photos, I wrote the menu belonging to each below. I must say the $250 is more worth it.

The question why Shinji could not get the 2nd Michelin star after so many years in Sgp eventhough it’s considered the best sushi restaurant in Sgp. Instead Shoukouwa got it after merely a year. I tried Shoukouwa first before Shinji, I can say, Shoukouwa is far better in ingredients, creativity, taste and aroma than Shinji.

Shinji is a good sushi restaurant but it doesnt “wow” me. I have to give it a 4 star coz I cant fault it. But it leaves me with little to look forward to the next time.

The restaurant is managed by a team of Japanese Chefs and offer seasonal courses comprising of appetiser, sashimi, cooked dishes, nigiri sushi, soup and Japanese fruit.

Nigiri Sushi is only made up of rice and raw seafood. However, unlike the sushi we are familiar with, nigiri sushi does not contain seaweed

We had Omakase Shin ($480/person) and Ginrei Gassan Sake($360). The alcohol complemented the dishes well.

You need to make reservation and prices starts from $280++ for lunch and dinner starts from $350++.
