It’s basically an empty plot of land unless an event is occurring such as the annual Pink Dot event, which I attended for the latest version (Pink Dot 2017). It was quite eye-opening and fun as well. A note though, foreigners aren’t allowed into Speaker’s Corner at Hong Lim Park, a government policy. It’s Singaporeans and PRs only, sorry tourists!

It has a long history, but in recent years there have been too many closed-circuit TVs, there is no privacy, and the number of trees has decreased in recent years, so it no longer has the atmosphere of the past.

“Speakers’ Corner is the right place for Singaporeans to express their views on matters of concern, and it is also a place for Singaporeans to gather without a permit, subject to certain conditions.”

Hong Lim Park’s “Speakers’ Corner” (The Speakers’ Corner), established in 2000, loosely refers to the model of London’s Hyde Park (Hyde Park).
Speakers’ Corner is the only place in the country where you can legally demonstrate

Last August I stayed in the hotel opposite
I didn’t expect this park to be such a place

Hong Lim Park is a site for storytelling and a place that tells Singapore’s story. Of historical and national significance, the park was originally named after the first Superintendent of Police, Thomas Dunman. But in 1876, the park’s name was changed to Hong Lim Green in honour of Cheang Hong Lim, a wealthy businessman who donated the land, making it Singapore’s first privately-owned public garden.

Through its history, the park has served as an important recreational area in Chinatown and is still the venue today for many community events. It started its storytelling tradition during the Japanese Occupation. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was used as a cricket ground by members of the Singapore Chinese Recreation Club and the Singapore Cricket Club, and in the 1960s and 1970s, the storytelling resumed in another medium as Chinese operas were performed on the stage. The park also served as the venue of many of Singapore’s first political rallies.

In September 2000, in recognition of the park’s storytelling and political legacy, the Singapore Government designated the park as the venue for Speakers’ Corner.

How to get there: By MRT, stop at Clarke Quay station, Exit A

    Park size: 0.97 hectares

Park lighting hours: 7.00pm to 7.00am

The only place you can protest in Singapore. Better than nothing I guess. It’s a decent place, a bit small though.

A place meant to symbolise freedom of speech (LOL!!!) and to function as a venue for sanctioned ‘protests’ (for which you need to apply a Police permit, and will almost always never get) in Singapore. A pure tokenist measure by the govt and very well-manicured… and full of a thousand police cameras (: You have been warned.

It is the only place for Singaporean to express opinions publicly. It lies in between Chinatown and Clark Quay MRTs. I have been there on Pink Dot event. So many people, and so much fun.

Pink Dot. Hong Lim Park. Music. Food. Merry making.

Every once in a while Hong Lim Park actually serves its purpose of societal engagement. Pink Dot was one such occasion.

Car park’s a little small, but you can’t beat the central location and ease of access.

There is a park where you can rest when your legs hurt after walking along the main road for a long time, and there is a simplicity like a shelter in the city.

Nice little oasis in the middle of busy china town – raffles – clarke quay area. This is the only place where people in Singapore can assemble for a cause after taking necessary permissions from the police I hear.
